Guangdong Province China Abstract Remote sensing application and research in Guangdong Province has achieved great development over the past ten years. Up to now eight remote sensing application and research stations or centers or experimental sites have been established in different fields Besides south China forestry Remote sensing Experimental Station has been built in Nankun Mountain and Pearl River estuary Comprehensive Experimental Site, one of the two sites for China’s resources satellites will also be put to use this year a part from the aerial system for remote sensing information acquisition equipments for spectral testing ground information processing and remote sensing mapping can basically meet the needs for multi discipline application of re,ote sensing .Remote sensing technology has been applied to more then 30 units in areas environment protection urban planning and remote sensing mapping further more. Some large scale comprehensive applications have also been carried out such as the comprehensive aerials remote sensing survey of Guangdong city. In some areas remote sensing has become a mature and indispensable method while space remote data are extensively used infrared color natural color and multi spectral aerial photography has also been frequently conducted with in Guangdong Province Airborne thermal infrared scanning applications More ever digital image processing as well as quantitative and dynamic remote sensing are making progress and a number of special remote sensing databases have been gradually set up. All this indicates the enhancements of remote sensing application level remote sensing work in Guangdong Province has achieved remarkable benefits making Gunagang an important base for remote sensing application and research inChina. Founded in 1979 Guangdong province remote sensing society is now 11 years old with a membership of 362 in the past ten years remote sensing application and research in Guangdong has made great head way with continuous expansion of application fields and rapid improvement of technology there have been a great number of application and research results manifesting good social and economic benefits of remote sensing Extensive application and research with large scale and depth specially features the remote sensing development in Guangdong province results and benefits of remote sensing application and research in various fields are briefly presented in the paper below. Province Wide Land utilization Survey Detailed investigation of current land utilization is one of the basic projects under national conditions investigation program under the unified organization technical guidance and quality supervision of Guangdong provincial land management department the latest aerial photos were used and the survey personnel were given short term training then the survey was carried out region rapidly and smoothly over the whole province during the survey orthographic images were used instead of the outdated topographic maps with indoor interpretation as the main method plus necessary field reconnaissance finally the survey was completed through precision transfer mapping and calculation in this way not only the survey cost was greatly but also the survey quality and speed was raised the survey findings jhave provided a basis for national land management and planning. Comprehensive Aerial Remote Sensing investigation of Guangzhou City Comprehensive aerial remote sensing investigation of guangzhou city was a large scale application project involving many fields with support of provincial and municipal government about 150 technicians from 20 units in Guangdong Province were organized to take part in the investigation .Investigations of 25 items including city construction status geologic background natural resources and ecologic environment of Guangzhou city were conducted using black and white panchromatic aerial photograph infrared color films and natural color aerial photographs images of various types and scales as well as tables and figures of other type were produced providing scientific basis for urban planning construction and management departments of Guangdong in perfecting the general and distinct planning rational transformation of old city areas and acceleration of environmental of urban data bases according to statistics relevant findings of this investigation have been used by more than 100 units with good results. Geologic Application Remote sensing method has become an indispensable means regional geologic survey it has been used by 12 field survey teams under the guangdong province geological and mineral bureau though vegetation coverage in Guangdong is extensive utilization of remote sensing images in analyzing geologic structure still has outstanding benefits it also effective to certain degree in litho logy division and in research on ancient volcanic structure and buried intrusive rocks popularization of this technique can save a lot of survey cost. In mineral deposits data projecting research has been carried out on method of using infrared narrow band spectral remote sensing to search for minerlized altered rocks in cooperation with other units this method has been effective in prospecting for gold by way of satellite digital image processing study of image modes of typical mining areas and geologic structure analyses target mining areas were identified and prospecting of metal minerals and hidden coal fields were carried out under effective guidance remote sensing images interpretation is also used in directing ground water survey subsequently ground water wells drilling rate is raised utilization if aerial thermal infrared remote sensing technique to identify the sulphur and uranium mineral beds is proved to be effective to some extent besides study of seismic tectonics and environmental gelogy using images of satellite SAR has been achieved some results. Apllication in Water Conservancy and Hydrology Lingdingyang Bay is one of the main outlets of a peral river due to serious sedimentation and continuous growth of nudflats navigation channels are gradually silted up and flood disposal capacity is reduced further more reclamation of mudflats is increasing in recent years it there fore urgent need to make unified planning and comprehensive improvement for Lingdingyang bay. for this purpose multi temporal land sat TM and MSS data of as long as 16 dynamic have been used analyze and study the changes in sourcing and silting regime water processing in this way plentiful data have been acquired for improvement and development of Lingdingyang the relevant dynamic state monitoring has been taken as an effective rout line method and is under continuous use. the national soil erosion survey was a priority assigned by the state a large amount of man power and funds would be required if conventional method was to be used the soil erosion survey of the pearl river basin including Guangdong Province was carried put using remote sensing image interpretation plus a small amount of field work. the survey tasks were finished in an experiment and economic manner the erosion modules and amounts were calculated and soil erosion intensity and grade classified on sectional basis this survey has yielded good results and the official results are in the press. During feasibility study of Fail ixia water control project aerial infrared color photography was specially made for the reservoir and damsite area which in combination with TM NOAA data provided abundant data for engineering geological study of the reservoir and dam site the reservoir inundation investigation and dam site selection. Application in Agriculture and Forestry The Nankun mountain areas in Guangdong province is rich in sub tropical forestry resources in the area a south forestry remote experimental station has been built systematic tests of vegetation spectrum in different years and different seasons were conducted in the experimental plant. A wealth of data have been accumulated providing basis for remote sensing classification of southern vegetation in china and for selection of best bands. Remote sensing has also been successfully in agricultural land utilization including survey of uncultivated land barren hills and relevant data are acquired rapidly for example a land utilization map has been drawn up for suburban areas of Guangzhou City. basic study of sugarcane put estimation was once conducted using remote sensing method in addition infrared color photographs are also in the study ecology fertility and productivity of fish ponds with encoring results. Meteorological Ocean Remote Sensing Guangzhou Meteorological Ground station is equipped with advanced information receiving and processing facilities this station has been conducting weather forecast and forestry fire monitoring successfully using china weather satellite and TIROS remote sensing information it can specially give accurate and timely forecast and monitoring for typhoon and forest fire playing a very important role disaster prevention and elimination for forest fire monitoring in Guangdong province the effective forecast time period is 1 hour the fire point forecast accuracy kilometer and the interpretation error of fire point is less than 0.2 hectare . In ocean remote sensing TM data has been successfully used to find our distribution of glass and coastal water and estimate their out put furnishing basis for the cooling water design of Dayawan Nuclear power station besides utilization of remote sensing information in study of reefs shoals and water depth south china sea as well as in comprehensive investigation of coastal belts and mudflats has also achieved remarkable benefits. Remote Sensing Mapping Remote sensing technical level Guangdong province has been greatly raised in recent years up to now various levels of maps have been made and extensively used such as black and white orthophoto images color or black and white image maps of different scales TM image tourism image maps most of them were supplied according to requirements of regions countries or cities besides color images and multiple anaglyphic strophic mosaic images were also successfully produced development of remote sensing mapping has provided timely the latest images for the national economic construction not subject to the difficulty of map updating therefore national land planning and project construction can be fast carried out. Environmental and Ecological Remote Sensing In addition to the above method province wide soil erosion survey satellite remote sensing data have also been used to make water containing capacity analyses for Lingdingyang bay and pearl river delta streams evaluation of phosphorus and nitrogen contact and quatic environment of the significance to quatic environment improvement and red tide pollution and solid waste distribution of Guangzhou city well as investigation of environmental geology and urban tree plantation these findings have been helpful in improvement of urban and rural ecological environmental. Conclusion In the past ten years remote sensing application and research area Guangdong province is under continuous expansion with constant advancing technical level from static research to dynamic monitoring from quantitative study to quantitative analyses and from experimental application research to actual application in production remote sensing application and social benefits this has attracted the attention of governmental departments and relevant enterprises a number of remote sensing application and research units or experimental field have been established one after another creating more favorable condition for further application and research and also indicating the great vitality of this new technology in the national economic construction through ten years of strenuous efforts splendid achievements have been in remote area Guangdong province has become now an important base in china for remote sensing area Guangdong province has become now an important in china for remote sensing application and research . |
